activity holidays new zealand

These safaris are hiking tours exploring many less known wilderness areas. Travelling by mini-bus from between 2-3 hours each day guides will be a zoologist, or geologist, or outdoor instructor or have studied extensively on a subject relating to this great planet. Imagine having a resident expert on hand to share their great knowledge. Everyone gets involved on the safari from collecting firewood, to setting up camp and cooking meals. Each person contributes to the 'food kitty' and food and meals are decided by the group. Accommodation is on a pay as you go basis.

Objectives for the safari include: to foster environmental awareness; to show travellers how to look after themselves in the great outdoors; to give them the sense of accomplishment that goes with facing and overcoming challenges; to have fun!!

These safaris are hiking tours of New Zealand and a reasonable standard of fitness is required. Almost every day will involve some hiking - some days for up to 7 hours with your backpack (for overnight hikes, your backpack with sleeping bag, personal gear, and food will weigh approximately 10 kg).

These safaris attract a range of people and nationalities, including New Zealanders. Everyone is fully involved with the running of the safari, from collecting firewood, to setting up camp and cooking meals. The safari encompasses group activities and participation including playing outdoor games, going for swims, helping one another to cross rivers and explore caves, and overcoming obstacles and challenges.

Graded difficulty=4 Secret South Hiking Nature Safari

The southern part of the South Island is seldom visited by travellers yet it has some of New Zealand's most rugged mountains and spectacular coastline. Hiking in New Zealand's most remote wilderness areas and visiting the best wildlife locations set this safari apart. Ending in Christchurch, also makes this safari a great way to finish a New Zealand itinerary.

Graded difficulty=4 Volcanoes & Rainforest

Hike through Jurassic-like podocarp rainforest and follow a river through a beautiful gorge in Whirinaki Forest Park. Kayak across the enchanting Lake Tarawera and soak in thermal streams surrounded by native bush. Hike through a spectacular volcanic wonderland in Tongariro NP and climb to the summit of an active volcano. Find glowworms, waterfalls and limestone formations in a hidden cave. Hike into Mt Egmont NP and climb Fanthams peak at dawn for stunning views of Mt Egmont/Taranaki and across to the distant mountains of Tongariro, National Park

Graded difficulty=4 West Coast Hiking Nature Safari

This popular safari will get travellers out of there: wading down rivers, hiking over mountains, camping on beaches, soaking in hot pools. From New Zealand's new, Kahurangi National Park through to the West Coasts, Paparoa National Park and Haast World Heritage Park areas, this safari covers a diverse landscape and holds many surprises.
