These safaris are hiking tours exploring many less known wilderness areas. Travelling by mini-bus from between 2-3 hours each day guides will be a zoologist, or geologist, or outdoor instructor or have studied extensively on a subject relating to this great planet. Imagine having a resident expert on hand to share their great knowledge. Everyone gets involved on the safari from collecting firewood, to setting up camp and cooking meals. Each person contributes to the 'food kitty' and food and meals are decided by the group. Accommodation is on a pay as you go basis.
Objectives for the safari include: to foster environmental awareness; to show travellers how to look after themselves in the great outdoors; to give them the sense of accomplishment that goes with facing and overcoming challenges; to have fun!! These safaris are hiking tours of New Zealand and a reasonable standard of fitness is required. Almost every day will involve some hiking - some days for up to 7 hours with your backpack (for overnight hikes, your backpack with sleeping bag, personal gear, and food will weigh approximately 10 kg). These safaris attract a range of people and nationalities, including New Zealanders. Everyone is fully involved with the running of the safari, from collecting firewood, to setting up camp and cooking meals. The safari encompasses group activities and participation including playing outdoor games, going for swims, helping one another to cross rivers and explore caves, and overcoming obstacles and challenges.
